2Timothy 1:3 I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day.
In this text Paul the Apostle says he has a pure conscience as he serves God, and I would say that all of us should serve God in the same way. The problem is that many people have no awareness of a conscience, and therefore cannot know if their conscience is pure or not.
If a person is not aware that something they are doing or saying is wrong, then they cannot be troubled by their conscience. But some natural laws are built in to all of us about how we should behave towards our parents for example. Now I will quote someone called H. C. Trumbull, who said this: Conscience tells us that we ought to do right, but it does not tell us what right is--that we are taught by God's word.
If a person is not knowledgeable of the Bible they will probably not know God’s standard of right. 1Samuel 24:5 And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt. David had done something on the spur of the moment and immediately his conscience had troubled him. He put things right with King Saul and once again he had a pure conscience. It has been said that the more we know of God and His ways, the more we see how sinful we are. That is why we are told to take up our cross daily and deny ourselves.
Prayer: Thank you our loving Heavenly Father for giving us a conscience so we can know when we stray from the narrow way that your will be done and your kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. Through Jesus Christ our Lord
